The wide, flat base is not decoration. A captain’s decanter was shaped that way for a ship’s table — the low centre of gravity kept it upright in a swell — and the same shape happens to give the wine far more surface area in contact with air than a narrow one does.

Decanting does two things. It gets a young wine in contact with air, which softens the tannin and opens up aromas that were shut down in the bottle; and on an older wine it leaves the sediment behind in the bottle rather than in the last glass.

The Venice pours from a tall angled neck with a slanted lip, has a glass handle, and carries a decorative glass coil wrapped round the neck. Part of the Luca Collection.

If you would rather not wait, the VinOair aerator does a faster, smaller version of the same job straight into the glass. The decanter is for the evenings when the bottle deserves the ceremony.

A family business that still makes the thing it invented.
Est. 1961

A family business that still makes the thing it invented.

It started in a workshop in 1961. Three generations later the family still holds the patent, still runs the line in Novato, California, and still packs the cartridges that go in the box.

That is why the refills never disappear, why an opener bought years ago still takes a standard cartridge, and why the thing feels like it was made by someone who cared.
