Gentler than the waiter's friend but not by much. The wings give you leverage, but you still have to grip the collar firmly enough to keep it seated on the bottle, and pressing both wings down simultaneously requires symmetrical strength in both hands.

The wings are also the reason this design pushes corks in so often. If the worm isn't centred, the downward force goes into the cork rather than around it.

The lever or "rabbit" style

A genuine improvement, and popular for good reason. The lever converts your pull into mechanical advantage, so the force required drops considerably.

The catch is that you have to clamp the unit onto the neck of the bottle and hold it there firmly with one hand while working the lever with the other. That clamping grip is sustained rather than momentary, which for some people is harder than a brief pull.

Electric openers

These remove the pulling entirely, and for many people that is enough. Press a button, a motor drives the worm in and lifts the cork out.

Two things to be aware of. They're heavy — most weigh over a pound — and you have to hold that weight steady on top of the bottle throughout the cycle. And they need charging, which is a small thing until the evening it isn't.

The design that asks the least of your hands
